La crucifixion est l’un des principaux thèmes de l’art occidental, et pourtant il est aussi l’un des plus fantaisistes par rapport à la réalité historique.

Comme l’on sait la crucifixion romaine pouvait se dérouler par diverses manières: les condamnés pouvaient être accrochés dans un seul poteau, ou dans une structure en forme de T, ou en forme de X ou de V inversé. Même les enquêtes archéologiques suggèrent que la croix dans la forme traditionnelle de l’iconographie chrétienne est absolument invraisemblable.

Pourquoi se propage ensuite une iconographie différente des croisements effectivement utilisés par les Romains? Le problème n’est pas facile à résoudre, mais sûrement René Guénon dans son livre Le symbolisme de la croix nous donne des suggestions éclairantes: la croix était un symbole pré-chrétien qui représentait l’intersection du plan horizontal (humain) avec le plan vertical (divin). Cette iconographie, déjà entré dans l’imaginaire des peuples anciens serait spontanément devenue le symbole de la nouvelle religion, étant donné la similitude de l’image avec l’histoire de la passion du Christ. En outre, la même figure humaine à bras ouverts doit avoir influencé la représentation de la croix dans les proportions dans lesquelles nous sommes habitués à la voir dans la forme classique …
