Ellero e Teodorico

Nel 1942 una missione archeologica tedesca portava alla luce i resti di un palazzo signorile a Galeata, sull’Appennino romagnolo. Probabilmente si trattava di un palazzo costruito dal re goto Teodorico, secondo le notizie riferite dall’anonimo autore della Vita di Sant’Ellero.

L’edizione moderna della biografia di questo santo è stata curata da don Franco Zaghini per i tipi della Società Editrice “Il Ponte Vecchio”. Il testo è stato scritto probabilmente in epoca precarolingia, verso il 750, ed è stato tramandato da codici molto antichi. Scritta in un latino corretto e a tratti anche elegante, la Vita Hilari tramanda le gesta di Ellero, che conduce vita eremitica in un monte della valle del Bidente, dove poi il santo darà vita a un monastero. Naturalmente l’autore seguiva i classici topoi letterari del genere: le vicende biografiche del santo ricalcano quelle del Cristo, inoltre si trova il consueto repertorio di guarigioni miracolose e di esorcismi.

L’episodio più importante è quello dell’incontro fra Ellero e Teodorico. L’autore narra che Teodorico aveva imposto pesanti corvées alla popolazione locale per la costruzione del palazzo e che Ellero si opponeva allo svolgimento dei lavori. Teodorico quindi si lanciò a cavallo contro il monastero, ma l’animale si rifiutò di avanzare e disarcionò il sovrano. Allora Teodorico chiese perdono a Ellero e da quel momento lo tenne in grande venerazione.

Ovviamente per l’autore la figura di Teodorico serviva solo come spalla per esaltare le virtù di Ellero, e l’aneddoto del cavallo voleva significare che il monastero di Sant’Ellero era il potere dominante del territorio, un potere col quale anche un sovrano doveva venire a patti.

Il testo inoltre è ricco di interessanti spunti sulla vita dei confratelli di Ellero, fra cui spicca l’abitudine di prendere il cibo da un canestro coperto da un telo, nel quale c’erano frutti di diverso genere, per non cadere nel peccato di gola.

L’esperienza spirituale di Ellero si colloca a metà strada fra eremitismo e cenobitismo, segnando un tipo di monachesimo che in quel territorio appenninico darà vita all’esperienza camaldolese.

Nell’ampio commento al testo, Zaghini esamina anche il materiale archeologico giunto fino a noi, proponendo interpretazioni originali che non erano state prese in considerazione da altri studiosi.
